Hey Homeskooler
We are all aware of the "teach yourself" programs. In other words a program where the parent has to put in as little effort as possible. For the parents out there who say that isn't true, they are either liars, or just can't figure out the information themselves. All of them say they do it because they want to be around their children so much. I just don't get why that time is with the kids teaching themselves. As for laws, most states have adopted the premise that "Education is the parents responsibility." I thanks God for the freedoms we have in this country, but those freedoms are granted to everyone. States used to do periodical drop-ins on homeschools to make sure the children were being taught. (Isn't it amazing that people only started doing homeschooling once they quit doing that.) I am not sure about all states, but I know most do not do that anymore. I also find it humorous that most parents will say that they are giving their children a better education, but ask them if they would be OK with inspections. Not a chance! The only way that I know of is to get 3 calls to the DCFS (department of children and family services) about abuse at the home. These can be annonymous, and do not have to be calls of physical abuse. Aside from that, there is not much that can be done. As I am talking about this, I think I am going to try and get a copy of the letter that "homeschool" parents have to sign. It would be interesting to see if there are any specifics that they aren't doing. Stay strong my friend. Parole is in 5 years.
