My name is Terra, I am 27 and I was homeschooled my entire life by crazy uneducated people. They used my two sisters and I as house slaves while teaching us that education was not important and girls were only supposed to be wives, mothers and most of all - subservient.
I basically ran away (at age 19, isn't that a ridiculous statement?) with no money, car, license, papers to prove my identity, diploma, or life experience. Just the clothes on my back, walking. I am proving them wrong though - I went on to find my own way back to my education, am currently siting on an Associates degree and am working on my Bachelors degree at one of the top art schools in the country- and have been accepted to the masters program. I run a very successful small business and am married with one small daughter - who I proudly send to public school.
I think homeschool should be illegal. Crazy, abusive, controlling people homeschool so that they can be crazy in private, and nobody monitors them!!!

Welcome to the forums, Terra!
It is refreshing to see that others out there have the courage to publicly speak the truth about homeschool and the (often permanent) damage that it so often inflicts upon it's young victims.
It is shameful and appalling to witness so many past and current "homeschool parents" who continue to adamantly and vehemently deny the truth about homeschool in an effort to protect themselves. They refuse to admit the truth, opting instead to hide behind the arrogant, self-righteous lie that "what we did was right". So many of these parents (and I use that term loosely) just cannot bring themselves to break free from the prideful arrogance that binds them to this blatant and obvious lie.
As an adult survivor of homeschooling who knows firsthand it's vicious sociological effects, I invite you to stick around and continue to offer your input, opinions, suggestions, and advice to others who have been or may still be in your situation.
In addition to helping others, it can be very self-therapeutic.
Best regards, ~homescrewed

Hello Terra, My name is Laura and I thought you may be interested in my story; I am very interested in yours and others like you. Here is a link to my story featured in an online newspaper: www.voiceofsandiego.org/education....1cc4c03286.htmlMy mother is also a fellow unschooler/homeschooler and what the article does not say is that the 8th grader tested AT LEAST 3 grade levels below in math. She is also reading at about a 5th grade level. I am very worried for my siblings, but there is nothing that can be done because in California there is no accountability for homeschooling parents. While I firmly support homeschooling when done properly, I think accountability it necessary to keep children from slipping through the cracks. I am trying to collect more personal stories to give clout to my own experience (many people are saying that my siblings are the only ones out there going through this) and if you can send me your story so I can share with others, I would be forever indebted to you. Please include as much contact info as you feel comfortable giving and if you know of anyone else who has a story like ours, please forward them this message and my email. Thank you so much in advance for your help! Laura Tate cahomeschoolreform@gmail.com
